Who We Are

Who We Are

We are expanding childcare access in Texas and beyond.

Our mission is to provide tuition-free, high-quality, Christ-centered childcare for families in need by equipping parents and engaging them in the classroom to lower costs and improve classroom ratios.

Our vision is to see this model expand across Texas and beyond so more parents have access to excellent childcare, fewer families remain stuck on waitlists, and communities can invest in sustainable solutions instead of endlessly growing subsidy programs.

  • Our Team

    • Jenny Johnson

      Executive Director

Jenny Jones has built her career around championing people, purpose, and possibility. Today, she serves as the Executive Director of Project One Day, where she leads a mission close to her heart: providing tuition‑free, Christ‑centered childcare that empowers parents to pursue education, employment, and long‑term stability. In this role, she guides the organization’s vision, growth, and community partnerships, helping families build stronger futures one day at a time.

Before stepping into this position, Jenny spent many years in senior nonprofit leadership, overseeing strategy, programs, and community impact across multiple locations. Her professional journey began even earlier during her 18 years as a pastor in churches throughout the Houston area, where she developed a deep passion for serving families and strengthening communities.

Jenny is also a storyteller at heart. Her book, Too Blessed to Say Yes, released in 2016, invites readers to examine how the pursuit of comfort can keep us from living lives of deep purpose and generosity. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Christianity and Political Science from Houston Christian University and a Master of Arts in Applied Biblical Interpretation from Moody Bible Institute.

At home, Jenny and her husband, Chad, are raising four children who keep their household lively and their calendar full. When she’s not leading teams or cheering from the sidelines, you can usually find her squeezing in a workout at her local CrossFit gym — her favorite way to recharge.

Our Story

2000s

Project One Day began in Houston’s Near Northside neighborhood to solve one big problem: safe, quality infant care costs more than many parents earn. While working as a defense attorney in Children’s Protective Services court, our founder Jennifer Johnson saw too many stories of kids left in unsafe situations because parents had to work.

2020

In 2020, she met with over 50 community and childcare leaders and found one idea that stood out: train parents to help in the classroom. In 2021, with a $75,000 grant from First Presbyterian Church, Project One Day opened our first licensed childcare home. Parents volunteered one day a week, received training, and in return got five days a week of tuition-free childcare so they could work or attend school.

2021

From 2021 to 2024, POD ran our pilot program, supporting families with training, diapers, meals, and Christian mentorship. We built a community where parents felt seen and children received safe, loving, exceptional care. In 2024, with strong support from local churches, donors, and partners, POD expanded to a larger childcare center serving more children and families.

Today

Today, Project One Day is working to share this model across Houston and Texas, showing how parents can help solve the childcare cost and labor gap together - all while giving kids the safe, loving start they deserve.
  • Our Values

    • 1. We value the gospel.

We believe God demonstrated His love for us through Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. We seek to honor Christ’s sacrifice by caring for God’s people and walking in His ways.

    • 2. We value children and families.

We believe God designed families and blesses them with children. We value education for not only children but their parents, so that we might partner together to provide excellent care.

    • 3. We value work.

We believe God created work as a means to cultivate creation, serve others, and contribute to the common good. We believe work does not earn us salvation, or even favor with God, but is a daily opportunity to honor our God in our homes, communities, and churches.
